Beginner's Guide: Choosing Your First Class

With 21 classes to choose from, picking your first Conquest of Azeroth character can feel overwhelming. This guide walks through a simple order of decisions: pick a role, then a class, then build it.

Pick a role first

Before the class fantasy, decide how you want to play. Your role shapes the whole leveling experience:

• Damage (DPS) — the fastest way to level solo and the easiest to learn. If you're brand new, start here.
• Tank — the most durable and forgiving option; great if you like leading pulls and surviving almost anything.
• Healer — keeps allies alive and is the most rewarding in a group, but scales best when you level with a partner rather than solo.

Every class locks into a primary specialization at level 10, and the experience differs sharply between roles, so it pays to know what you want before you invest.

Then pick the fantasy

Once you know the role you want, choose the class whose theme and mechanics appeal to you. Each class page lists its specializations, resource system, armor, and a one-line summary of every spec, so you can find the one that fits both the role and the playstyle you enjoy.
